PC Powersave

 Can you save the planet?

Right now!

Sitting at your computer?

Of course you can!

This website will show you two easy ways you can make a small but valuable contribution to the war against energy waste.

But first, ask yourself these two questions:

Is your computer set to the 'Power Saver' power plan?

If you don't know what a 'Power Saver' power plan is, then it probably isn't.

When you're away from your computer, it's wasting energy, spinning disks, turning fans and lighting up the room with its widescreen HD monitor.

But as you know,if you leave your computer alone for a while, it will turn off the display and 'go to sleep'. When you return, you press a key or click your mouse and the PC wakes up ready where you left it.

But do you know how long the computer waits for you before it gets fed up and goes to sleep?

Windows 7 comes with three default power plans.

In the normal 'Balanced' plan, the computer  will wait ten minutes until it turns off the display on your screen. And a whole half-hour before it puts itself to sleep.

Using the 'High Performance' plan, the computer will wait fifteen minutes to turn of the display, will never put itself to sleep.

But if you activate the 'Power saver' plan, your PC is much more impatient. The display will turn off after only five minutes, and computer will get bored and go to sleep after only fifteen minutes.

And if you are away from your desk frequently, you can train your computer to go to sleep sooner - after only five or ten minutes, for example.

Your computer is like a puppy. When you leave him, he barks and wags his tail for ages until he realises you're not coming straight back. Then eventually, he (maybe) settles down and goes to sleep.

Well, you can train your 'puppy' to settle down quicker, and not wear himself out so much.

It might not save a huge amount of power, but think of all the times you leave your computer turned on without using it for ten minutes or more.

It all adds up. Do something about it now.

It's easy and quick to activate the 'Power saver' plan.

Do you turn your computer system off every day?

Click to go straight to 'Nag files' page

Yes, I'm sure you turn off the PC by clicking the 'Shut Down' button.

But do you turn off the screen by pressing the power button on the monitor?

Do you turn off your printer? Every time? Really?

I'm sure you forget sometimes. We all do. When it's time to go home, we're not worrying about saving energy. So we forget to turn everything off.

And when we turn off the computer, the screen goes dark. And the printer is way over there where we can't see it. So we don't think about it.

But while they're still turned on, the monitor and printer might not look very active but they are using energy.

Not much maybe, but all night, every night. And all weekend. And all over the Christmas break. And while you're away in the Bahamas for a fortnight.

It all mounts up.

But suppose every time you turned off your computer, someone nagged you with "Don't forget to turn off your screen and printer"?

Everytime. Every day.

Yes, I'm sure you'd get pretty annoyed with that person nagging you every time. But you would turn off your screen. And your printer. Every time. Every day.

OK - no-one is going to stand behind you every night nagging you.

But how about your computer telling you to 'turn off the screen', or 'turn off the screen and printer'.

Yes, when you click on 'Shut down' to turn off your computer, it will nag you - to press those power off buttons.

It's easy to download a nagging voice and install it on your PC, ready to remind you at home time.
