What is a Nag file?
A 'Nag file' is a small sound file which we can use to replace one of the system sounds in Windows to remind us to turn off the screen and printer (and any other peripherals) when we log off Windows.
What is a system sound?
Your computer plays a sound when certain events occur on your computer. (An event can be an action that you perform, such as logging on to your computer, or an action that your computer performs, such as alerting you when you receive new e‑mail.)
Windows comes with several sound schemes (a collection of related sounds) for common events. Additionally, some desktop themes have their own sound schemes.
For example, here are a some sounds you are likely you be familiar with:
The Windows Shutdown sound is not very distinctive, and is not likely to remind us to shut down our computer system properly.
So we want to replace it with a Nag file - perhaps something like this:
I think you'll agree that the Nag file has a much better chance of grabbing your attention as you rush to go home. You will be much less likely to forget to shut your system down properly.
